Tech Sightings - Site of the Day - April 14th, 2000
This has to be the most complete IT professional resource site I've ever seen. If you're an IT manager and you're not coming here first thing every morning, you're probably missing out on something important. There's nothing fancy about it, just in-your-face collections of Web stuff you need. First on the list are the message forums, hosted by the site. They're lean, but they're there if you have a burning need to comment on some issue or ask a question. The real strength of the site is the links collection. There are no less than 49 sections, each with a full complement of choices. That's a lot of links, in case you were wondering. Other sections include one for white papers, again with many, many different topics, a knowledge base, top IT picks, IT jobs, IT research, and an IT newsletter. There are also links to a chat room, conferences, e-commerce, and a guru list - which is an interesting collection of personal Web pages and photographs. That's not all. I challenge you to visit this fine and seemingly neverending resource.
WebReview: itmWEB offers links for IT professionals - July 18, 2000
As network administrators, we are faced with myriad choices when it comes to resources for IT information. In fact, the Internet is a chaotic jumble of IT information. With so much out there, attempts to organize this information have led to a boom in Web sites that are dedicated to becoming the one-stop shop for IT professionals. While no site can claim to fulfill your every need, there are a few that do provide excellent coverage of the IT industry. Here's a look at one site that attempts to organize the clutter.
ItmWEB to the rescue
The Web site at itmweb.com makes a valiant attempt at organizing information for the IT professional. Russ Finney, a CIO executive for Tokyo Electron, founded the site in 1996. ItmWEB started out as an independent information technology management reference tool for CIOs and other IT professionals. However, like so many "home page" Web sites, the mission quickly expanded. ItmWEB found it was taking on the role of a respected source of IT information for professionals, students and educators.
Features
The front page of itmWEB is more than your typical list of links. The site includes links to white papers, knowledge bases, forums, benchmarks, job listings, and newsletters. A newswire feed from the Tucows NewsHub gives the site some added punch with hourly updates on IT world happenings. There is even a link to Japanese IT information, which will be of interest if you need to gain an international perspective.
One of the more interesting and telling features of the itmWEB site is the IT Forums section. The forum software from Ultimate Bulletin Board is very familiar to me. The free trial version of the software allows for a total of nine forums, which happens to be the number of forums on itmWEB. However, the fact that the forums all have fewer than a hundred postings makes me suspect that forum participation is rather sparse on the site.
Overall, itmWEB is not a bad source of IT information, if the information you seek is in the form of links to other places on the WWW. There isn't much original content, and what's available on the site tends to come from Mr. Finney. While his content is okay, it may be a bit limited for most tastes. ItmWEB contains useful information, but I would not consider it a primary source for all my IT resource needs.
