Why do I need a Web Site?

A web site is an additional form of communication between yourself, your existing clients, and possible new clients. It's like having a 24 hour telephone line combined with a company sales brochure that can be updated quickly. It's also surprisingly cost effective.

Will my customers look for me on the Internet?

With our assistance, your company web site will be registered with all the top search engines and online directories, so there's a good chance that both new and existing customers have looked for you. Would you prefer that they found your competitors details?

My friend says he can build me a web site, Why shouldn't I just use him?

That may be the case, but will s/he put a great deal of thought into its design? Work regularly to ensure your site can be found? Will the site load quickly? Will they resolve problems when you need them to?

I am not local to you, can we still do business?

Yes. Tools such as e-mail, faxes, telephones, and delivery services such as the post office and FedEx allow us to do business with virtually anyone, anytime, anywhere.

I need a computer to have a web site, right?

Although it is recommended for customer correspondence, your possession of a computer is not required to have a website. Web sites are on specially configured computers called web servers. This is not the same as the common household compute r or office computer. The web server is usually connected to the internet via a direct connection, such as an ISDN, T1 or T3.

I have a web site, but I'm not happy with it. Can you help me?

Yes. We can streamline your site to load faster, make it more visible in major search engines, tweak it slightly to fix your concerns or completely redesign it from the ground up. It's all up to you.

Can I update my site myself?

If you're comfortable with making minor changes to your site we see no reason why you shouldn't. Of course, we'll give you a hand if you need help. The one thing we don't recommend is making major changes to your site yourself. We've seen many people ruin their sites in the process just to save a few dollars.

How long does it take to build a complete web site?

The timeframe for the development of a complete web site depends on several factors. A basic 4-5 page informational site usually takes about 2 to 3 weeks from receipt of all necessary materials, while a larger, more complex site may take anywhere from 6 months to a year. One thing you can do to speed the process along is to have all of your materials (copy, images, logos, files, etc) to us as soon as possible. When you are ready to start on your project, Open Technology Web Designs will present a detailed proposal that will include an estimated timeframe for completion. Contact us today to request a proposal for your project.

How much does a web site cost?

The cost of owning a web site varies, based mainly on the time it will take to develop and the technologies involved. A basic, informational (4-5 page) web site costs anywhere from $250-$500 to design and develop. It's a good idea to have a budget in mind for your web site in order to help us to prepare an accurate and realistic proposal.

Other web site requirements include the $12.95/year cost of registering a domain name ("www.yourbusiness.com"), web hosting ($5.00/month and up, depending on the requirements of your site), and regular maintenance of your site (updates, new features, content), which are billed on an hourly basis. Our current maintenance rate is $30/hour.

If you are planning on selling products online (E-commerce), one of the things you need in order to accept credit card payments is an Internet Merchant Account. The cost of accepting credit cards on your web site usually involves a setup fee of approximately $200, plus a monthly gateway fee of $50-$100. You will also need a "shopping cart," which keeps track of an order before a buyer is ready to "check out." Although the cost of maintaining an e-commerce web site may seem high, it could be a worthy investment for high-traffic web sites.

What do I need to establish a web site?

You need access to a web server, most economically by a web hosting company such as Open Technology Web Designs. You also need to build the site. Open Technology Web Designs can provide all that you need to establish your site.

What is Web Hosting?

Web Hosting is the function of a computer configured as a web server that has the files that make up a web site on it's hard drive. One web server will usually have many web sites on it unless it is dedicated to one large site or a site that receives a very large amount of traffic. There are very large websites that utilize more than one server for their operation.

Do I have to get a domain name?

Having a domain is not required. If you have a dial-up account (ISP) to the Internet, you probably have some personal web space that you can use. That said, if you're serious about establishing a business website and you want to get good traffic to that site, you'll register a domain. Here's the main reason why:

With a domain, your address is www.myname.com. Without it, your address will be www.someothercompany.com/ ~yourcompanyname/index.html. Which one will you be able to tell someone about over the phone? Who is going to remember the non-domain address after they've seen it?

Domain names are a bargain - We'd rather see you put up a smaller site with a domain name than a bigger site without a domain name, even though we'd make more money on the bigger site. Your site will be more successful with the domain name.

What is HTML?

HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. It is the base language used for creating web pages. It is a set of formatting tags the web browser uses to know where and how to display text and graphics on the computer screen.

What is JavaScript?

JavaScript is a web page programming language. Unlike HTML which is used for creating the layout for a web page, JavaScript is used to enhance web pages with interactivity. It does require a browser that supports Java, most newer browsers do.

Is Java and JavaScript the same thing?

No. Java is used in a different way than JavaScript. Both are used for web pages but Java is also used to write programs for uses other than the Internet. It is used for developing applications and systems or mini web applications called applets. Applets are small programs used by web pages for special interfaces such as chat rooms, special forms, and other interactive uses. Applets are on the Internet server that hosts the web site, and the page uses the applet.

What is Perl?

Perl is a scripting language used for processing form input. When you submit a form the data entered is sent to the server where the Perl script will process the information and send the results to the intended receiver.

What is "e-commerce"?

E-commerce is the buzzword for the new millenium. And for very good reason. The Internet is changing the way business is done. Literally billions of dollars are being made over the Internet. E-commerce simply means Electronic Commerce. E-commerce gives you the ability to accept payment over the Internet. You can accept payment via credit cards, checks, or even bill a customers telephone account (the charges show up on their phone bill). Through e-commerce, you can sell products or services (or accept donations) with or without a merchant account.

What is a merchant account?

A merchant account is a bank account for businesses and can be used to help you transact payment for products/services.

Do I need a merchant account to sell on the Internet?

No. Virtually any product or service that can be sold with a merchant account can also be sold without one. One advantage to a merchant account is that you may be able to use your own bank for financial transactions through e-commerce.
